The paint is dry, the pavers are laid and New Zealand’s most beautiful street is about to open a new chapter in its colourful history on Saturday 20th April.
A favourite with locals and tourists alike, New Regent Street is likely to become even more popular as Christchurch’s only remaining heritage streetscape. With its beautiful architectural features painstakingly restored, and the distinctive pastel colour scheme repainted, the street will feel both familiar and fresh to the city’s residents.
In amongst the history and heritage there’s an exciting range of new businesses set to open in the boutique shops. From gourmet fudge and cookies to a whisky bar and diamond jeweler, New Regent Street is all about pleasure and indulgence. Whether sipping a latte while admiring the period features and attractive landscaping, indulging in a haircut and manicure, or meeting friends for drinks, it’ll once again be a stylish haven for pleasure and relaxation.
The reopening of the street also represents the power of successful collaboration. From the building owners working together on the restoration, to the skillful coordination and management provided by Christchurch City Council and CERA, and the sterling efforts of a host of builders and craftsmen, the street’s reopening is truly a triumph of teamwork.
New Regent Street Ambassador, Betty Hazeldine, is both humbled and delighted at the achievement. “There’s palpable excitement amongst the building owners and businesses as we prepare to reopen”, she says, “and we’re all incredibly grateful for the help and support afforded to us.”
The businesses themselves are also actively working together as they prepare to open their doors to an enthusiastic public. Under the New Regent Street brand, with the tagline ‘Indulge Yourself’, the street will be marketed as a boutique shopping, entertainment and heritage destination for locals and tourists alike. On the opening weekend, there will be opportunities to meet the new businesses, enjoy some entertainment and admire the street’s magnificent restoration.
Businesses keen to relocate still have a wonderful opportunity to be part of New Regent Street’s new start, as several beautifully refurbished and stylish shops are available for lease. Naturally, only businesses intent on indulging their customers need apply.
